Co-existence of Mankind and Grasshoppers

Charles Kim, Ph. D.
Professor &
Dean of Student Affairs
Cheonan Yonam College

When I was about to leave for work, I happened to meet a grasshopper, sticking onto the rear mirror of the car. My home is surrounded by a mountain called Mt. Tae-Jo in Cheonan, and I sometimes come across insects nearby. First, he stuck on it hard and began to move, inch by inch, up and down. While driving my car, I kept sidelong glances at him; as the glass was so slippery, he was making strenuous efforts to support himself and get off.

What am I going to do for him? The place where he lives must be perfect for him in many respects, compared to other places. On my way to work, I can see a lot of grass on the roadside. I often look at farmers getting rid of grass with the use of machines or pesticide. So, I should not throw him away on the roadside. Besides, judging from his size, he must have some children. However, he cannot come back home on his own.

I decide to make him go back home. But it would take all day long for me to return
home; during that time he has to have something to eat and some place to play around.

The first thing to do for him is to let him into the car. So, as soon as I open the window, he immediately jumps slightly into it. Thinking that he wouldn\'t like the cold air, I turn off the air conditioner, and make the windows wide open to let the air in. He jumps about here and there, seeming to be relieved. Then he looks into my eyes intently, which makes me plunge into some thinking in an instant.

I was reminded of the novel Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. The hero of the novel was suddenly transformed into a spider; nobody of the family recognized him at all. He suffered from severe existential alienation, resulting from the breaking-off of the connections with all of his acquaintances, especially his own family. There was no longer any love, even though he had enjoyed it till then. He lost all kinds of love such as friendly affection, neighborly love, divine love, to say nothing of parental love; no one would stay beside him; the grounds he had stood upon disappeared. He felt solitude among the crowd! Even though he belonged to a group of people, nobody paid attention to him. In short, he became just like an isolated island in a boundless ocean.

On the other hand, Buddhism says that when a person has done too many absurd things during his life, he is sure to be reincarnated in the form of animals in the after-world. What kind of connection has brought us to meet each other at this very hour and at this very place, sharing the same space together for about a full day long? Who is he and who am I? What are our identities, indeed? What did both of us look like before coming into this world and how will we be like when we pass away?

My college is famous for the beautiful scenery. It looks like a picture scroll spread out. All of the corners across the college are covered with fresh foliage. On the weekends, a great deal of people come in flocks to enjoy leisurely walks over the lawn. However, to our regret, I cannot remember having noticed insects like grasshoppers here, which is, to be sure, attributed to our relying too much upon modern conveniences, which will make us more comfortable in maintaining and controlling it. So, there may be little possibility for him to survive here, when I let him loose. But he has disappeared somewhere now ― what shall I do?

After work, when I get into my car, I have found him! He is sticking on the windshield just in front of me. I have forgotten his existence because of my being occupied with my work. To my surprise, he seems to be not weak, even though he has not had anything all day long. In addition, the temperature in the car must be so high with all the windows closed. I say to myself, \"I have to hurry home and let you go home.\" I have him under my thumb. He is as strong as Hercules. As soon as I go home, I release him on the grass cautiously. He runs fast without even saying goodbye.

Reflecting upon my youth, everywhere was littered with insects, such as grasshoppers, dragonflies, mantis, ground beetles, long-horned grasshoppers, beetles, fireflies, crickets and Oriental long-headed locusts. It could be described as \"half of them are grass, the other half insects.\" They used to keep abreast with us, when boys were racing somewhere; they hurried away hastily, when we tried to catch them. In those days, we took no opportunities to enjoy the philharmonic orchestra; instead, at any time, we were always attracted by the beautiful harmony they were making together. Materialistically, we were poor; yet, spiritually, we were very rich then.

On the contrary, how is it today? As you know well, it is a prize beyond my reach to find an insect. Children can only discern the image of a grasshopper from a book, to the detriment of their illusion and imagination. We wish children could regain the innocence of their childhood. They should perceive the fact that both mankind and grasshoppers are parts of the universe. To do this, we have to try our utmost so that children can recover their innocence and imagination. What about leaving the nature as it is for about one or two years? It would enable the field to be filled with grasshoppers ― which will, to be sure, realize the dream of making our world the space where mankind and insects co-exist.
