청춘이란 인생의 어느 기간을 말하는 것이 아니라 마음의 상태를 말한다.

Youth is not a time of life - it is a state of mind.

그것은 장미빛 빰, 앵두같은 입술, 하늘거리는 자태가 아니라 강인한 의지, 풍부한 상
상력, 불타는 열정을 말한다.


It is not a matter of red cheeks, red lips and supple knees.

It is a temper of the will ; a quality of the imagination ; a vigor of the
emotion ; It is a freshness of the deep springs of life.

청춘이란 인생의 깊은 샘물에서 오는 신선한 정신, 유약함을 물리치는 용기, 안일함
을 뿌리치는 모험심을 의미한다.

Youth means a temper mental predominance of courage over timidity, of the
appetite for adventure over a life of ease.

때로는 이십의 청년보다 육십이 된 사람에게 청춘이 있다.

나이를 먹는다고 해서 우리가 늙는 것은 아니다.

이상을 잃어버릴 때 비로소 늙는 것이다.

This often exists in a man of fifty, more than in a boy of twenty.

Nobody grows old by merely living a number of years ;

People grow old by deserting their ideals.

세월은 우리의 주름살을 늘게 하지만

열정을 가진 마음을 시들게 하지는 못한다.

고뇌, 공포, 실망 때문에 기력이 땅으로 들어갈 때

비로소 마음이 시들어 버리는 것이다.

Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.

Worry, doubt, self-distrust, fear and despair-these are the long years that bow
the head and turn the growing spirit back to dust.

육십 세이든 십육세이든 모든 사람의 가슴속에는

놀라움에 끌리는 마음, 젖먹이 아이와 같은 미지에 대한

끝없는 탐구심, 삶에서 환희를 얻고자 하는

열망이 있는 법이다.

그대와 나의 가슴속에는 남에게 잘 보이지 않는

그 무엇이 간직되어 있다.

Whether seventy or sixteen, there is in every beings heart a love of
wonder ; the sweet amazement at the stars and star-like things and thoughts ;
the undaunted challenge of

events, the unfailing childlike appetide for what comes next, and the joy in
the game of life.

아름다움, 희망, 희열, 용기, 영원의 세계에서 오는 힘,

이 모든 것을 간직하고 있는 한

언제까지나 그대는 젊음을 유지할 것이다.

You are as young as your faith, as old as your doubt ; as young as your self-
confidence, as old as your fear, as young as your hope, as old as your
despair.

영감이 끊어져 정신이 냉소하는 눈에 파묻히고 비탄이란 얼음에 갇힌 사람은

비록 나이가 이십 세라 할지라도 이미 늙은이와 다름없다.

그러나 머리를 드높여 희망이란 파도를 탈 수 있는 한

그대는 팔십 세일지라도 영원한 청춘의 소유자인 것이다.

In the central place of your heart there is a wireless station.

So long as it receives message of beauty, hope, cheer, grandeur, courage, and
power from earth, from men and from the infinite - so long are you young

When the wires are all down and the central places of your heart are covered
with the snows of pessimism and the ice of cynicism, then you grown old,
indeed !
